4. Tonnara di Avola (Avola, Siracusa)
Sicilian tuna nets: The Tonnara di Avola is located on the coast of Avola, a few kilometres from Syracuse, and is one of the oldest tuna nets in Sicily. The current building dates back to the 17th century and was a vital centre for tuna fishing until the 19th century. Its strategic position between the currents of the Ionian Sea favoured the passage of large shoals of tuna, making it one of the most active tuna fisheries in the area. Today, although the tonnara is no longer active, the structure can be visited from the outside and represents an important historical heritage.
History and Architecture
The Tonnara di Avola was built of sandstone, and included a large factory for processing and preserving tuna, warehouses and rooms for storing nets and boats. Historically, it belonged to local noble families who managed its fishing activities. The building is characterised by its arches overlooking the sea and its architectural simplicity that reflects the functionality of the old fishing establishment.
As tuna fishing declined, the activity of the tonnara ceased and today the building retains only part of its original structure. Nevertheless, the place remains a destination for those who wish to learn about the history of the Sicilian fishing tradition and admire the coastal landscapes.

- Exploring the Tonnara: Although the structure is partly ruined, it is possible to visit it from the outside, where you can see what remains of the work areas and the stone arches.
- Walk on the Avola Coast: The area around the tuna fishery is a natural area overlooking the sea, ideal for walking and enjoying the view of the Ionian Sea.
- Museo della Mandorla di Avola: Not far from the tonnara, this museum offers an insight into the agricultural tradition of Avola, famous for its almond production.
