Selinunte rewrites itself: new discoveries and a new image for the park

The Archaeological Park of Selinunte, jewel of south-western Sicily, continues to surprise the world with new discoveries that enrich the historical and cultural heritage of the entire island. Recent archaeological excavations have in fact brought to light the monumental north gate and sections of the ancient Greek city’s fortified walls, significantly shifting the known boundaries of the ancient urban centre.

These discoveries, made in the northern area of the site, show that Selinunte was much larger than previously assumed. The discovery makes it possible to rewrite the urban map of the archaic city, shortly before its destruction at the hands of the Carthaginians in 409 BC, confirming its central role in the Mediterranean as a point of reference for Greek culture.

A new look for a millenary heritage

The new features were presented during a public event held inside the park, in the presence of the regional councillor for Cultural Heritage and Sicilian Identity, Francesco Paolo Scarpinato. The councillor emphasised how the park is carrying out extraordinary work, managing to independently finance excavations and enhancement activities. ‘Selinunte is a living, dynamic park, which is at the service of the public by offering engaging and accessible cultural experiences,’ said Scarpinato.

To crown this new phase of relaunch, the Park also presented a renewed visual identity. The new logo, designed by studio Atelier 790, is inspired by the leaf of ‘selinon’ – the ancient wild celery from which Selinunte takes its name – depicted on a historical didrachma dated between 540 and 510 BC. The colour palette of the new brand also draws inspiration from the original temple decorations, and is applied to all site communication, including merchandising and internal signage.

Innovative excavations and state-of-the-art technology

The excavations, conducted by the Archeofficina team under the scientific guidance of Professor Carlo Zoppi of the University of Eastern Piedmont, used innovative methods, such as three-dimensional geoelectrical tomography. This technique makes it possible to explore the subsurface down to a depth of four metres, offering detailed mapping of buried structures.

“We have overcome the old boundaries drawn thirty years ago and entered an area that had never been explored before,” says Felice Crescente, director of the park. “The aim now is to make these discoveries accessible to the public, through a museumisation project and the virtual reconstruction of the ancient city walls.

An immersive experience for every visitor

To further enhance the visitor experience, CoopCulture – commissioned by the park management – has developed a new intelligent signposting system. The panels, distributed at strategic points, indicate the main areas of interest: the Eastern Hill with its monumental temples, the Acropolis facing the sea, the Manuzza Hill, the sacred area of Malophoros and the spaces in between, as well as services such as electric shuttles, bicycle hire and walking paths.

This new organisation helps tourists find their way around one of the largest archaeological sites in Europe, planning their visit according to the time available and their level of physical fitness. Whether you choose a guided tour or an independent exploration, the Park offers an immersive journey into the past, thanks also to the use of digital tools, interactive maps and augmented reality.
